Reactor Materials Testing Lab

Project Type
Research

Location
Kingston, ON

Client
Queen’s University

The Reactor Materials Testing Laboratory (RMTL) is an exciting research endeavor for the Queen’s University Nuclear Materials Group. It uses a proton accelerator to damage materials at a microscopic scale. This simulates the effects that occur within a reactor, allowing us to investigate the way materials respond to stress and temperature. The goal is to develop a better understanding of these material behaviours, leading to the safe, long-term operation of reactors.

The facility has been funded with a grant from CFI/MEDT and support from Queen’s University and the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science. The work included obtaining full regulatory approvals for the complex equipment.

The project was a joint venture with DSAI.
