The renovation of Queen’s University’s primary 450-seat auditorium, which is used for teaching and musical performances. SZA was hired to correct the technical shortcomings of the existing room and to provide state-of-the-art lighting, audio-visual, and information-technology systems.

The design and construction work was completed during the four-month academic summer recess. A fast-track approach with pre-tendering of seating, air-handling equipment, light fixtures, and millwork was used.

The budget did not permit the replacement of the room finishes. A series of faceted curved wood panels were added to the room - integrating the technical requirements for lighting and ventilation, providing acoustical panels for the different requirements of music and speech, as well as transforming the character and adding warmth to the room.
